Studying with Hotaru is free. Hotaru Pro is an optional auto-renewing subscription sold by Apple (section 6).
You own what you create. AI-made cards and the ready-made decks can contain mistakes: check what matters against your sources (sections 4 and 5).
By using Hotaru you agree to these terms and to Apple's Licensed Application End User License Agreement (apple.com/legal/internet-services/itunes/dev/stdeula), which governs the app license. If they conflict, these terms prevail where the law allows.
An account is optional and uses Sign in with Apple. You're responsible for activity on your account. You can delete it anytime in Settings › Delete Account.
You own the decks and cards you create. You give us only the permission needed to store and sync them for you.
When you share a deck by link, anyone with the link can view it and copy it into their own Hotaru. Only share material you have the right to share.
Shared decks must not contain sexual content, hate speech or slurs, harassment, threats or violence, illegal content, spam or scams, or material that infringes someone else's rights. Before you create your first link, the app asks you to agree to these rules.
Shared decks are checked by an automatic filter when published. Anyone can report a deck from the app (⋯ › Report Deck) or from its web page. We review every report within 24 hours; a deck reported by several people is hidden automatically until reviewed. Decks that break these rules are removed, and accounts that post them lose the ability to share.
You can block a person who shared a deck (⋯ › Block This Sharer); their decks are then hidden on your device. Manage blocked people in Settings › Privacy.
Cards, answer checks and explanations made with Apple Intelligence or Hotaru Cloud AI are generated automatically and can be incomplete or wrong. Review them, and check anything important against your own sources.
Cloud AI is limited per account per day and may be unavailable at times.
The Explore decks are general educational material provided as is, without guarantees of accuracy or completeness. The health decks, including First Aid Essentials, are not medical advice or a substitute for professional training; in an emergency, call your local emergency number.
Studying is free: every card and every review, with or without a subscription. The free plan includes 2 decks (the sample deck from onboarding doesn't count), 1 Apple Intelligence creation per rolling 7 days and the Explore decks marked Free. Decks you already have are never locked.
Some Explore decks open with Glow instead. You earn Glow by studying while signed in, or buy it in packs through Apple. Glow is a license to use in Hotaru, not property: it has no cash value, can't be sold, transferred or exchanged for money, isn't part of Hotaru Pro, and is removed with your account. Glow packs are one-time purchases; refunds are handled by Apple under its terms, and Glow from a refunded pack may be removed. A Glow deck you unlock stays yours.
Hotaru Pro is an optional auto-renewing subscription, monthly or yearly, that removes those limits and adds full Insights and alternate app icons. It's billed to your Apple Account at the price shown in the app before you buy, renews automatically unless cancelled at least 24 hours before the end of the current period, and your account is charged for renewal within the 24 hours before it ends.
Manage or cancel in your Apple Account's subscription settings or from Hotaru's Settings › Manage Subscription. If a free trial is offered, any unused part ends when you subscribe. Payments and refunds are handled by Apple under its terms.
Don't misuse the service: no attempts to break, overload or reverse-engineer it, no automated access to the cloud AI, and no use of shared links to distribute unlawful or infringing content.
Hotaru is provided "as is". Sync, sharing and cloud AI are offered on a best-effort basis and may change or pause; your device always keeps its own copy of your decks. We may update the app and these features over time.
To the extent the law allows, we're not liable for indirect damages or for lost study data beyond what you paid for the app in the previous 12 months. Nothing here limits rights you have under consumer protection law.
